Though quarantine can feel stressful, it’s given me more free time than I normally have. Thanks to that, I can catch up on leisure activities like experimenting with new recipes, diving into a great book, and especially watching an exciting new TV show! There have been so many great new shows coming out on streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime that I haven’t had time to watch for myself—until now. You can always check out these platforms’ offerings online, but I wanted to share my favorites if you need inspiration for the next show to binge-watch!
- Tiger King (Netflix)
Of course, I had to start this quarantine by binging Tiger King! This is a true crime docu-series about Joe Exotic, an eccentric zoo owner in Florida that allegedly orchestrated a murder plot against animal rights activist Carole Baskin. Though it’s only seven episodes, the bizarre twists and turns of this show—think death, sex, and the craziest-ever campaign for governor—kept me watching for hours. I can’t give away spoilers, but this show has to be seen to be believed!
- Self Made (Netflix)
This dramatic Netflix series chronicles the life and rise of C.J. Walker, the first African-American self-made millionaire. She’s played by Octavia Spencer, who I absolutely love! Powerful and beyond inspiring, it shows Walker’s rise to prominence as an entrepreneur for black women’s hair care while she overcame extroardinary racism and sexism. After watching it, I felt extremely inspired as a female entrepreneur and woman of mixed race—and isn’t media that champions those kinds of things what everyone should be watching? If you love movies like The Help,The Secret Life of Bees or The Pursuit of Happyness, this is perfect for you!
- Fleabag (Amazon Prime)
This British show, created and starring comedian Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is one of the funniest comedies I’ve seen in a while. Set in London, it follows a woman known only as “Fleabag” as she navigates a messy romantic life, tragedy, and family drama with dry wit and dark humor. Though there are some sadder, humane moments on the show, it’s absolutely hilarious! Bridge’s unfiltered way of speaking and breaking the fourth wall with the audience is simply brilliant, too.
- Ozark (Netflix)
I had my doubts about this drama show (especially since it seemed darker based on its’ posters) but it’s held up! This show focuses on Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), who relocates his family from Chicago to Osage Beach, Missouri to set up a money laundering scheme in the Lake of the Ozarks region. The drama is complicated and grows as the show continues, but expect lots of murder, betrayal, and crazy twists as Marty’s operation spreads and his family interacts more with the Ozark locals. Jason Bateman adds a lot of humor to this type of show, which helps lighten the mood and makes it even more binge-worthy.
- Outer Banks (Netflix)
This show just came out on Netflix, but it’s quickly become one of my favorites! Set in the titular Outer Banks, NC, it focuses on a group of teens searching for $400 million in gold that’s been lost at sea. This show takes place in the summer, so it’s the perfect relief from quarantine and looks forward to the sunnier days ahead. The soapy drama and mystery is also perfect for a binge-watch that’s adventurous and full of fun. If you love mystery shows on the lighter side, make sure you check it out!
